The Divine Avatar

The Caenyr-specific variant of Paladin

Alternative Sub-classes: Paragon of Draxil, The Green Knight, Warlord of Raekhan
Related Histories: Paladins: A Modern History

Divine Avatars take their adventures seriously, and even a mundane mission is, in the heart of the divine avatar, a personal test - an opportunity to demonstrate bravery, to learn tactics, and to find ways to further the agenda of their deity. Divine power protects these warriors of faith, warding off harm, protecting from disease, healing, and guarding against fear. The good-hearted divine avatar can also direct this power to aid others, healing wounds or curing diseases, and also use it to destroy evil. In turn, the evil-hearted divine avatar can direct this power to harm others.

A divine avatar is not just a fighter with 'lots of stuff'. A better way to see the divine avatar is as a war-like cleric. They are designed to be warriors with the added bonus of some magic that is focused on battling those going against the tenets of their deity. As a result, when you are crafting your divine avatar you must take to consideration a great number of things.

Requirements & Restrictions

Alignment: Avatars of Light must be Lawful Good, Avatars of Darkness must be Lawful Evil, Green Knights must be Neutral Good, Paragons of Draxil must be of any of the Lawful alignments (see history for details) and Warlords of Raekhan must be Lawful Neutral.

Although the Divine Avatar class can be selected by all non-chaotic alignments, you must be of the above mentioned alignment to take levels in this class, even when using it as a prerequisite for a prestige class.

Quest: Player characters cannot begin as a Warlord of Raekhan, they have to earn that class through a personal quest (see history for details).

Ex-Divine Avatar: Divine avatars are unable to progress in levels if their alignment ever deviate from the requirements of their respective sub-class.

Special: If you create your character as a first level divine avatar, please follow these guidelines.

Mechanics

Hit Die: d10
Skill Points: 2 + Int Modifier (x4 at 1st level)

Proficiencies: All simple weapons, all armor, and shields
Class Skills: Concentration, Heal, Hide, Lore, Parry, Persuade, Spellcraft
Spellcasting: Divine (more information about divine avatar spellcasting can be found here)

Making the best Divine Avatar
To really gain the full benefits of being a divine avatar one has to be above average in several abilities. Cha is what divine avatars are known for - they are leaders, and they are an inspiration to troops. Cha is used to determine the strength of Lay on Hands, saving throw bonuses, turn undead ability and the power of their Smite. Wis is used to determine what level of spells are available. Finally, Dex, Str and Con are all elements of being a warrior that need to be considered as well. Selecting what you want to take is a difficult process and must be prepared to make sacrifices in other areas in order to gain the full benefits of this class.

A benefit of the divine nature of the spells cast is that divine avatars can wear any sort of armor without a penalty for spell casting. Divine avatars do a lot of fighting so the ability to wear any sort of armor is very important.

Abilities on Level Up

Base Attack Bonus: +1 per level.
Saves: Fortitude favored.

  1. Divine Grace*, Divine Health, Lay on Hands*
  2. Aura of Courage, Smite*
  3. Remove Disease, Turn Undead

Caenyr-specific Improvements

    Reworked
The paladin class was renamed to Divine Avatar, and opened up to some specific alignments in addition to Lawful Good.

    • Avatar of Light
This is the normal, Lawful Good paladin. If you are a paladin now, you will be considered an Avatar of Light. There is no need to reroll if you played a paladin before this change.

Accepted deities: Tyllar, Shavista, Verinia, Durin, Draxil, Jaerik

    • Avatar of Darkness
This is the Lawful Evil anti-paladin. If you follow an evil Deity and wish to be their unholy warrior, this is the way to go.

        Changes:
        • Lay on Hands cannot be used to heal, but only to harm. This will be treated as a touch attack, and deal damage equal to your Divine Avatar level multiplied by your charisma modifier.
        • Holy Sword will turn your weapon into an Unholy Avenger, with all the stats of Holy Avenger but doing 1d6 negative damage to Good alignment instead.
        • Smite Evil: This will be changed to Smite Good in the near future. Not yet implemented.

Accepted deities: Melivar, Valsharess, Raekhan, Karissa, Drigen

    • Avatar of Balance
This is the Neutral Good Green Knight of Ath'endal'lynn.

        Changes:
        • Holy Sword will turn your weapon into a Natural Avenger, with all the stats of Holy Avenger but doing 1d6 electrical damage to Evil alignment instead.

        Accepted deity: Ath'endal'lynn

    • Avatar of War
This is the Lawful Neutral Warlord of Raekhan.

        Changes:
        • Holy Sword will turn your weapon into a Martial Avenger, with all the stats of Holy Avenger but doing 1d6 cold damage to Lawful alignment instead.
        • Smite Evil: This will be changed to Smite Lawful in the near future. Not yet implemented.

        Accepted deity: Raekhan

    • Paragon of Draxil
This is the Lawful holy warrior of Draxil.

        Changes:
        • Holy Sword will turn your weapon into a Draconic Avenger, with all the stats of Holy Avenger but doing 1d6 fire damage to Evil alignment for LG and LN paragons, and to Good alignment for LE paragons. instead.
        • Smite Evil: This will be changed in the future. Not yet implemented.

        Accepted deity: Draxil

    Summon Mount
The Avatars of Darkness, Balance, and War will also find that their summoned mount looks more in tune with their roleplay.
