On the Turgma and the Har'akla

For orcs, the dividing line between this life and the next is not nearly so clear-cut as it is for men and elves. Orcish spirituality emphasizes the circular nature of life and death, and the living world and the afterworld are seen as "two hairs on the same warg," as the orcs would say. This is poignantly demonstrated by the turgma and its effect of the orcish race.

After the fall of Kaljurtnool and the scattering of the remaining orcs, surviving orcish communities began to have more and more problems with acts of violence and fits of temper. While orcs have never had sanguine temperaments, they now began to fight and kill one another in unprecedented numbers. In cases of great difficulty, the orcish custom is for the shamans and war shamans to retreat to a duneghul and petition the ancestors for help and advice. Several of the remaining shamans did so...only to be attacked and possessed or slaughtered by weh'tah stronger than any in recorded history. Very slowly, the truth began to emerge-so many orcs had died in a state of anger during the war and had become weh'tah, that the entire ancestral realm was being poisoned by hate. Worse yet, since the living world reflected the spiritual one, the living orcs were also being driven slowly mad by a blood-red tide of anger that was sweeping out of the spirit realms like a tidal wave.

And it only got worse. As more and more orcs forgot their culture and succumbed to the rage, physical differences began to manifest. Children were born stunted and brutish, and so mad with rage that they fought and killed for the joy of doing it. Thus was the race of uk'tarr, "the fallen people," birthed. The smaller, more vicious orcs began to organize into communities of their own, communities that spurned traditional orcish culture and venerated Kawjujwak, or Raekhan. They bred like mad and made unceasing war on everyone, but especially the Gah'tarr, who they unconsciously blamed for the horror of the war. The Gah'tarr dwindled to a mere handful of villages. Only orcs of great will could resist the turgma entirely, and without the guidance of the ancestors, the remaining orcs became demoralized. Many went insane and destroyed themselves.

Only the Aganah, the twin souls who had undergone the Urgool, were totally immune, although those who had human blood were also especially resistant. Years passed, and the Uk'tarr grew more and more numerous, as the Gah'tarr dwindled. Today, there are less than seven Aganah left, and only few hundred Gah'tarr, in all of Caenyr. There are no more shamans who know how to perform the Urgool. Orcish civilization gutters like a candle...
