The Illithids reigned over parts of Underdark long before the Itheril or Benenok.

There origins go back, much further....

Not all the Ikarni died when their cities plunged from the sky, indeed, some managed to found an existence within the dark halls below what would soon to be known as Underdark. Here, trapped and unable to reach the surface, they adapted, surviving in whatever way they could. They forged small cities in this land devoid of light, surviving on strange plants and creatures that populated it. Their great machina were mostly lost, though they still had some with which they created new caverns, but for the most part, the remnants of the Ikarni had little with which they could create new machina.

It was during this time, the Ikarni divided, adapting in more ways than one. While some longed to return to the surface, some believed, they had been given greater purpose, that they had somehow been placed here to shelter them, because they were superior. One particular city, Illium, was the deepest of them all, nestled inside a great chasm. Here, they delved into the secrets of the mind, believing that through mental power, they could dominate the rest of the Ikarni and become the ultimate rulers of Caenyr. Over the years, as they plotted in secret, their corruptive research and magics changed them, while the other Ikarni forged great spheres of light they hung from the cavern ceiling, those of the Illium shunned it, adapting their increasingly small eyes to the dark, lighting their city only with purples and red hues. They in their minds, were moving forward, while the rest of the Ikarni dwelled on the greatest of their past.

Over thousands of years, they resembled Ikarni less and less, growing distanced from their brothers, who had banded together, suspicious of the Illium. The Illium had developed into cruel, insidious beings, their appearance had changed rapidly, developing tentacles instead of mouths and preferring to feast upon brains, rather than meat. Their bodies became long and thing, their skin grey or purple as the corruptive magics of their surroundings took their toll. The final step was not biological, no, it was much simpler, instead of referring to themselves as Illium, they chose Illithids.

The Illithids, realised a new diet was available, new creatures had evolved around them, above them creatures known as the Itheril had began to stake territory of their own. There was some difficultly in this however, the dark halls of the Ikarni were extremely deep and it was at present, impossible for them to reach the surface, only the Illithids still persisted and they were eventually rewarded. They expanded into this realm, quietly, avoiding direct contact with the Itheril. Preferring to steal and enslave a wayward scouting party.

Now, the Illithids war with both the remnant Ikarni and the Itheril and sometimes the odd foolish adventure who wanders to deep into the Underdark. They war for only one thing, total domination. The Illithids will never strike you down with a sword, they will instead seek to totally dominate and control your mind and soul, before they quite literally eat your brains. They are the most feared all of the denizens of Underdark.

Personality: Illithids or Mind Flayers, are cruel, insidious and evil but most of all, Arrogant. They hold themselves superior to all other races of Caenyr. They enjoy enslaving other beings and forcing them to fight, or simply carry out their will. Such is their cruelty, they enjoy nothing more than torturing their victims inside their own minds, or forcing them to betray comrades or loved ones.

Society: Illithids form cities with a central Elder brain; these are closely knit groups, which usually have their own agendas, though they are all loyal to the greater Illithid cause. In some regards, they share architecture similar to the other Ikarni, but for the most part, share nothing with their ancient brothers, except hatred.

Slaves: The Illithids keep many slaves, mostly a collection of Ikarni, Itheril and humans. These slaves are mostly bound to the will of the Illithids, but sometimes, they are given the illusion of freedom for the amusement of the Illithids. It is rumoured there are slave villages perhaps even towns, which are left to their own devices, except for when the Illithids arrive to pick new slaves, or merely torment them for entertainment, secure in the knowledge of their superiority.

The Illithids do have a most important use for their slaves besides entertainment, they are livestock.

Relations with the Itheril: The Itheril have launched campaigns against the Illithids in the past, all have failed miserably, with many warriors and priestesses lost to the Illithids, who have benefited greatly. Now, the Itheril tend to avoid them, except to for short-lived raids, to try and keep the Illithids at bay. So far, this has worked, yielding better results than attempts to actively strike at the core of the Illithids.
