The Eldarii and the lands of Atar'andor

Far to the west of Etaria lies a large island. It is known to the elves who live there as Atar'andor or "Mother Earth" when translated from Elvish. This island is perhaps too large to be called an island ((approx the size of New Zealand)) and is mainly the home of the Eldarii, a culture of wood elves, and the Kai Urun Orcs. These two groups have lived on this isle for many thousands of years. How they came here is something the elves have only ancient songs about and none truly know why they came.

In the songs, the Elves speak of the finding of a great island, whose forests had not been scarred by the evils they had left behind. They had come and dwelt in this great land, only to find the Kai Urun had followed them there. And so to protect the "Mothers Cradle" (their term in Elvish for the forest) they fought the Orcs away from their new forest, into the mountains. The Orcs took up permanent residence in the cliffs and craggy mountains surrounding most of the forest. They preyed on its outskirts for lumber and got food from the scrawny animals which lived in the mountains.

Since they can remember, the Elves have protected the borders of the great forest from the marauding Orcs. The forest itself is incredibly large, allowing nearly a hundred thousand Eldarii to live apart from each other under its eaves. Since they live in symbiosis with the forest it became their home and provider. They named it "Eldamar" or "Elvenhome" since that is what it is to them.

The Eldarii live a wanderer's existence. Their connection to the land is so strong, the Great Mother (Known as Ath'endal'lynn, god of Nature in the lands of Chail Anden) is considered to be the parent of each and every Eldarii. There are no towns or villages within the forest. Each of the Eldarii live off the land, gaining sustenance from the mother's bounty. They consider the entire forest their shrine to nature, and so guard it carefully from the mountain orcs.

Mating is a curiosity of these people since it is rare for Eldarii to unite with a lover for their entire life. Often a man and woman will meet by chance in the woods and travel together for several months. If they decide the union feels right, they will have a child who will be raised for their first year by both parents, after which the parents will go their separate ways. The child usually stays with one parent although this is not a solid rule. Even though the forest is large there are many Eldarii so it is not uncommon to cross paths with others. On average an Eldarii will cross paths with another once or twice a week, considering the density in which the people live.

Young Eldarii are raised in the inner areas of the forest, away from the more dangerous eaves of the woods. The parents will wander with their children, teaching them about the land and the lore of the people, of the balance of life and death, and worship of the creations of the great mother. The age of maturity among the Eldarii is slightly younger than most Elves, being 100. Their intimacy with the land and living in harmony with it means most Eldarii are proficient rangers, being fantastic archers and having an excellent understanding of herb lore. Some Eldarii are born magic users and are treated slightly differently than other children. Those who are born to non-magic users are usually apprenticed to a nature mage or druid. At the age of twenty five, they leave their parent to travel with their master, who continues to teach them of their people as well as how to harness the powers they can access. Many of these mages end up becoming "watchers", trained to spot Orc raiding parties coming down the mountains towards the forest. If a magical child is born to a mage, there is no need to apprentice them to another mage and they remain with their parents.

Once the young reach the age of maturity they usually leave their parents or masters to travel the woods alone. They continue to expand their understanding on their own or during meetings with other Eldarii. The one place the Eldarii are in close proximity to each other is the edge of the woods. Most consider it their spiritual duty to protect the forest from the Kai Urun in the mountains. Needing timber to create forts, shelters and machines of war, the Orcs come to hew the great trees of the forest for their own needs. Over thousands of years they have also carved great caverns and cave systems into the mountainside from which they could launch their attacks. The edges of the forest seems empty to an observer, but hundreds vigilantly wander within sight of the plains beyond the trees, listening for a watchers call. The watchers are mages trained in vision spells and long range spells. They shy away from fiery spells due to the damage it could do to their forest, but they are proficient in many spells of war. They are charged with warning of an impending Kai Urun attack. Around the forest there are perhaps 100 watchers who maintain vigil for days on end, in case of an orc attack. They all carry large horns, which emit a specific tone known to all Eldarii. Hearing this tone, all who are near will rush towards the sound to help defend the forest against attack

An orc raiding party will usually form up on the great ash flats near the top of the mountain, then descend through the caves to the grassy plains before the forest. They armour themselves mainly against arrows mainly carry large axes to hew the trees with. These parties are usually large since small groups rarely reach he forest. The watcher nearby will be relied upon to sound his horn, high up in the trees to alert all the Eldarii nearby. From the woods will fly hundreds of arrows towards the orcs. If the raiding party is large, enough will survive to fell up to twenty or so trees and retreat before other Eldarii reach the area.

When the Eldarii become older they tire of constant war with the Orcs and retreat into the deeper forest, home to the youngest Eldarii and the older. Some green dragons also live there who are sources of great knowledge for the elves. Once in awhile they will unite with the Eldarii to fight off the Kai Urun, protecting the forest which is their home.

Once in awhile an Eldarii will not be happy with their live in the forest. They are known as seekers, and rarely stay long in the woods after they reach maturity. These elves commonly build a small ship using what wood they can take from the Orcs (they will never cut down the trees of the forest themselves) and sail off into the sea in search of new lands. Most seek to bring the lore of their land to others while some are rebellious and leave to escape the control of their society. Obtaining the wood for a boat is the most treacherous of quests to set for themselves since wood is treasured among the Kai Urun. Obtaining it costs many lives and so they do not part with it easily. This forces most seekers to combine forces in order to leave the lands. The beaches of the great bay are where they live, usually just inside the woods so that orc archers upon the great mountain pillars to both sides have little chance to attack them.

The ships are built within the woods and in the darkest of night are carried out as the elves put to sea. It is rare for Eldarii seekers to return, but those who do are usually wise in ways the normal Eldarii do not understand, because they have seen a world so different.
