Gobley

The language of Goblins and Hobgoblins. A few scholars dispute that Gobley is even a language at all. They sight its limited vocabulary, its large similarities to the common tongue, and its total lack of a writing system. In their opinion it is not a language in its own right but a crude and distorted version of common. Most scholars, however, are willing to acknowledge that Gobley, the tongue of Goblins and Hobgoblins, stands on its own merits as a distinct language.

The controversy in understandable, Gobley is a limited language, unable to easily convey many highly complex meanings, and ideas. Even such basic concepts as love, friendship, loyalty, and devotion are not found in the vocabulary. On the other hand, the language contains surprising depth and nuance when expressing other terms like hate, war, and jealousy.

Many words in Gobley appear to have their roots in the common tongue. To the untrained ear they do not appear to sound much at all alike but linguistic scholars agree that either Gobley is an offshoot of common, or draws from the same roots. A smattering of Orcish words, mostly having to do with fighting and war, appear to have been adopted over time as well, but the speculation is that these words were merely adopted into the tongue (probably due to their superior ability to convey certain concepts) rather than being any sort of evidence of Gobley being related to Orcish in the way it is thought to be related to Common.

In addition to the limitations of the vocabulary, dialect is also a problem in classifying Gobley. The differences in how Gobley is spoken from tribe to tribe varies greatly to the point that anything beyond the most basic communication between members of different tribes requires greater precision and patience than most goblins are capable of.

Regardless of dialect the sound of Gobley remains fairly constant to the untrained ear. The cant of the speech is similar to Common but with a much more guttural sound, intermixed with hoots, hisses, growls, and even body language.

While the simple and crude nature of the tongue makes it technically easy to learn, there are actually very few non-native speakers of Gobley. A major factor in this is a lack of qualified and willing teachers. Also problematic is the lack of interested students. As well, even those that bother to learn the tongue will find that anything beyond the most basic communication will be near impossible outside the specific tribal group that speaks the dialect they have been taught without, at least, spending several weeks learning to understand and speak the new dialect.
