Of Darien and the Nomads...

Zenegral... the Holy City. Sacred to some, but to the peoples of the Frozen North, the city was a growing threat. The nomadic tribes launched raids against its borders on an almost daily basis. These raids were doomed to failure of course, because each tribe alone had not nearly the numbers to truly threaten the city's existence. Still... the elders of the tribes hoped that if they could unite, victory could be achieved. So with their influence, such an alliance was formed, albeit uneasy.

Darien Ky'varan, Captain of the Hurdash Company, a company of fighting men, Mercenaries mostly. The Keepers of Zenegral made them an offer.... they were paid very well to fend off the Nomadic raids, and help defend the city. In a great battle, they defeated the Nomad army, which in the end simply lacked the tactics to defeat such a well-organized force. Days later, word was received from a Keeper inviting them to a Victory parade. En route, the Hurdash was ambushed by another Mercenary group. The Hurdash defeated them easily... but they had suffered some losses. When questioned, the Mercenary captain of the defeated force told Darien they had been hired by the Keepers. So, Darien led the Hurdash out into the Frozen North to build an Army of his own. This army came to be known as The Horde.

Since the day of the Amush, Darien was filled with an ever-growing Hatred for the Keepers and their accursed city. Fueled by his Hate, he ordered a sword forged... one of great power to aid him in his ultimate goal - to level the city and destroy the Keepers for their treachery.

When the sword was being forged, Darien ordered a captured Keeper scout who had been their prisoner for weeks be brought to him. Darien grabbed the Keeper by his matted hair and forced him to his knees. He held the Keeper's head over the molten-hot blade that was being forged, as it lay in the Forge-fires. His throat was slit, and the Keeper's blood drained not onto - as it did not evaporate from the heat - but into the hot steel of the blade. An earthquake exploded outward from the half-made blade, and it was pulled from the flames shortly after. It was thrust into the cooling waters, now completed. The word 'SEVER' was clearly etched into the surface of the blade, and blood red runes covered its surface. As Darien took up the blade for the first time, he felt a power unlike any he could comprehend. It is said that his eyes glowed with the same blood red hue that lit the runes on the sword that night...

Failure's Curse...

The Great battle. The morning after the blade SEVER was forged, the Horde moved to attack the city of Zenegral. The two armies met on an open field in a clash of steel and magic. Darien fought like a man possessed. The sword glowed angry red in his hand and with every kill it seemed to get brighter. As Sever sliced though Keepers' armor and flesh it seemed to drink the victims' blood. Thus the wounds it made did not bleed.

The Keepers fought well and with much bravery, but The Horde was empowered with spirit as they saw their leader in a blood-frenzy cutting down Keepers left and right. Though they suffered heavy losses, The Horde was gaining the upper hand, and victory seemed almost assured. At least another force entered the fray...

The Order of the Emerald Flame was not about to let The Horde sack their home, as much as they too disliked the Keepers. Weighing the lesser of two evils so to speak, the Order charged into the unguarded flank of the Hurdash. The blow was unbearable this late in the battle. Darien lacked the reserves to call up to fight off the Order. He was forced to sound a retreat, and so The Horde was defeated on that day.

Darien was healed with the great magics of the many shaman of the Horde, and quickly he was regenerated from his battle-wounds. When he was well again and rose from his bed... something odd happened. He set his foot down in a pool of blood. By instinct he reached for Sever, but instead of giving in to his will, the sword sent a jolt of powerful purple energy through Darien. As the blade was pulled free, Darien was thrown across the room from the jolt. The blade fell to the ground with a dull thud.

A voice echoed through Darien's tent...

You and the blade are as one, but not until the blade tastes flesh again can you be reunited and your appetite for blood quenched. Such is the price of failure.

The guards outside rushed in at the sounds of commotion, but the tent was found empty and seemingly free of signs of struggle. The only thing out of place was Sever, lying on the ground in a pool of crimson blood. Its runes had faded to an icy blue.

The Curse Broken...

Though many tried, none could wield the great blade. Any who tried were blasted away from the sword, and thus the curse held true. It could only be used again if it tasted flesh once more, an odd dilemma since none could wield the sword. After that time, the blade was passed down as a ceremonial weapon to each successive leader of the Hurdash. That is, until one Warmistress finally tried the blade again....

Jade Malice was undead, a Vampyre. With her hands, the sword saw life once more. Her state of unlife left her unaffected by the blade's curse, and in her hands it at last tasted blood again. The runes glowed red once more, and the curse was finally broken. With her passing, the new Warlord Serak took up the blade. Something bad had happened to him shortly after though... an event not fully known to this day. Whatever it had been, it left the Warlord in a comatose state. During this time, the blade had been stolen by some vile creature. Ashrem of the Zendal had taken over as Warlord during the time, but the blade was neither seen nor heard of again.

Though when Ashrem left, a man filled with as much Hatred as Darien took over the reigns of the Hurdash. Shortly after becoming Warlord, the blade returned.

WHOOSH!

A bright beam of yellow light, crackling with electricity, shot down from the heavens and connected with the dirt of the Horde's Arena. For miles it could be seen, and those that looked closely may have seen a dark silhouette shoot down from the top towards the ground. Moments after the light struck the ground, a resounding shockwave spread through the western mountains.

Konar had been training in the Arena at the time, practicing with the Overseer and his younger brother. The three stopped to watch the unfolding spectacle before them.... The light was nearly blinding.

The Light faded....

When their vision returned, as their eyes readjusted to the absence of the intense light, it was there....

Plunged into the center runic circle that marked the dueling area of the Arena....

Sever...

Villagers and Hurdash alike began to gather around... The blade had returned to its home by its own will. It had felt the presence of a new Warlord and returned to shed blood for the Horde once more.

Konar approached the Blade, letting Furion fall from his grasp. He reached out, and grasped the handle of the sword. The Runes lit up a vibrant red, and the word 'Sever' on the blade pulsed with a vivid colorless light. Konar's eyes glowed red, seemingly in tune with the blade... much like Darien's were said to, so long ago. With tug he pulled free of the dirt and held it upright before him. He had never been good with a sword, and had always prefered more simple weapons like the Axe or Hammer. Though with a few practice swings, he felt oddly in tune with the weapon. He raised it again, staring at the word Sever. He turned to the gathered crowd... He thrust the weapon into the air above his head, a sheath of crackling electric-like energy erupted from the hilt and encircled the blade from hilt to tip. The Warlord shouted...

LONG LIVE THE HORDE!

And so the Legend of Sever continues on...
